Healthcare’s workforce shortage issues continue to be a major topic of discussion at annual industry events such as ViVE and HIMSS.
The Association of American Medical Colleges projects that by 2036, there will be a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians. The need for physicians is fueled by several factors, including the number of physicians nearing retirement age and leaving the workforce, and a growing population of older adults (age 65 and older) who will likely need more access to care.
There’s also an increasing number of adults who are managing multiple chronic conditions: A 2023 JAMA Cardiology report found that 1 in 4 adults have a chronic metabolic, renal or cardiac condition, and 1 in 10 adults have multiple chronic conditions.
