Smart Hospitals: What Are They and How Are They Improving Patient Care? jordan.scott_xWTB Mon, 04/07/2025 - 08:51

Health systems are reimagining their facilities with smart hospital technology to boost patient care and improve provider efficiency.

Smart hospitals are connected technologies that deliver real-time analytical insights to improve patient care. These technologies include artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and smart sensors.

“It basically means giving the infrastructure of the hospital the same sensory capabilities that doctors and nurses have,” says Dr. Andrew Gostine, CEO of Artisight.

Smart hospitals efficiently connect data from electronic health record (EHR) systems and other applications, explains Jess Perkins, a healthcare sales strategist for North America at Red Hat.

“For smart hospitals to be effective, they’ve got to treat data as an asset of the organization,” Perkins says.

Smart hospital solutions from companies such as Artisight offer a full system of sensors that solve problems with real-time, data-driven automations. It includes cameras, speakers, microphones, an indoor positioning system and large language models that read EHRs, according to Gostine.

This year Newsweek and Statista listed Cleveland Clinic as the “world’s best smart hospital.” The health system has implemented telemedicine and ambient listening to help document care. It also uses AI and quantum computing for drug discovery.

Telemedicine, connected medical devices and remote monitoring are also part of the smart hospital innovations at Northwestern Medicine, based in Chicago. Remote monitoring could provide real-time data to reduce patient readmissions post-discharge, says Hannah Koczka, vice president of ventures and innovation at Northwestern Medicine. For example the health system’s “hospital at home” program can help patients manage their diabetes and address medication adherence.
